Singles Tennis Strategy

Winning in singles tennis requires more than just hitting the ball hard. Here are the key strategies that separate good players from great ones.

1. Be Solid and Use Depth

The foundation of good singles play is consistency and depth. Keeping the ball deep in the court pushes your opponent back and reduces their angles.

  • Aim for at least 3 feet inside the baseline on neutral rallies
  • Use topspin to create margin over the net
  • Avoid unforced errors by playing within your capabilities

2. Find a Weakness and Target It

Every player has a weakness. Your job is to find it and exploit it relentlessly.

  • Test both sides early in the match
  • Look for technical weaknesses (e.g., a shaky backhand)
  • Identify physical weaknesses (e.g., poor movement to one side)

3. Play with Controlled Aggression

The best players know when to attack and when to rally.

  • Attack short balls decisively
  • Look for opportunities to come forward
  • Do not over-hit when a well-placed shot will do

4. Deal with Pressure Points

Big points require mental toughness and smart shot selection.

  • Stick to your patterns on big points
  • Serve to your best spot on important points
  • Stay composed during deuce games and tiebreaks
